Black Lesbians on TV (real & pretend)

Jasika Nicole is an out actress who plays FBI Special Agent Astrid Farnsworth in Fringe, a Fox sci-fi series. Tonight I will watch the show for the first time just because she is playing on it. If she actually has something to do and is not just on camera for three minutes I'll watch the show. And I hope that if she does have a substantial part that her character isn't "straight" if her character has sexuality.

I wanted a picture of Cheryl & Kima (HBO's The Wire) on my blog and I just came upon this one at another site and snagged it. I mainly started out watching HBO's The Wire because of Kima and then stayed for a while because she had a partner who she shared her life with. The story between these two women didn't go the way I would have liked it to but and I lost track of the series. I saw a youtube video clip where Kima went to drop off a child support payment and Cheryl had another woman there. Kima was paying child support to a child she barely acknowledged.

Hollywood, the land of creativity need to go deeper into relationships than have a couple breakup due to infidelity. And if a woman can have a romantic interest in a lizard in a commercial then why can't a woman have a romantic interest in a woman in a tv series? And I'm talking more than just looking into a woman's eyes. What's more dramatic and comical than real life?

On YouTube I saw clips of a Spanish series that had two women who were lovers. They worked in a hospital. I think the title is Hospital Central. They gave each other looks but they also hugged and kissed like they were adults and not shy teenagers. That's the kind of show I want to watch that is made in the USA. I don't watch much tv so maybe there is a show like that being produced right here in America. If so, please tell me. The little info I get about tv shows is by reading something on the web.

The Original Charlie's Angels subtext?

One of my favorite all time tv shows is Charlie's Angels. As a lesbian teen it was good for me to see that women could be intelligent, athletic and attractive who could do more than get into trouble and wait for a man to rescue her. The original Angels did it all. They could run, race cars, skate board, dance, roller blade, swim, play golf, tennis and they had guns that they would shot if they had to.

Kate Jackson (left) is one of my favorite actresses. She played Sabrina Duncan, the unofficial leader of the Angels. I'm not the only one who thought there was a connection other than working partners between Sabrina and Kelly. Kelly Garrett (right) was played by Jacqueline Smith. Some of the looks and antics between those two lovely ladies were more interesting to me than the occasional romantic interest they had with male quest stars. They played better off each other than with the men. Hey, it was the late 70's and I had to get my tv lez-pairing when I could.

I'm not the only one who noticed the subtext between Sabrina and Kelly. Last night I came across a page that had a Sabrina/Kelly ship manifesto. I snagged some nice pics so I'll give the URL so you can go visit that site and see them yourselves. It has been a long while since I've watched Charlie's Angels and reading that page brought back some fond memories and I even remember some of the lines. At the bottom of that page are a few title to Sabrina & Kelly stories.
http://www.ralst.com/SK_CA_Manifesto.HTM

It is now 2010 and hollywood still do shows that have women playing off each other in subtle ways so that women who love women have to imagine what they do when in private. I've been reading reviews of current tv shows where the imagination has to be used instead of just putting women together in a romantic relationship. I pay for cable too so why can't I turn my tv set on and see a show or movie that have women in romantic relationships with each other? It is not enough to have women touching lips, with no passion, or laying in bed together as friends because that is only tossing crumbs, and I'm not hunger enough to watch that. I'd rather read a web-story or make up my own stories about women who do more than look into each others eyes.

Have you figured out that I just posted this because I want to have that pic on my blog. :) HA!

Is American TV Growing Up - Memphis Beat

I don't watch much television but last night I was clicking channels and came upon a show that has one of my favorite actresses on it. On Memphis Beat, Alfre Woodard plays police Lt Tanya Rice, boss to the lead character. I actually watched a new tv show to the end.

On the episode last night, a Black undercover female cop complimented Rice on her bossom the first time she saw her. The men laughed. I noticed Rice's bossom when she made her first appearance last night because she had cleavage. It was cool the way the Lt handled it. She told the female cop to stand up and said "first, thank you" and then she told her that she was a superior officer, mentioned sexual harassment. That was one of the best scenes that I have seen in a long time on American television. The issue was that the comment was made at the work place and to a superior officer. Lt Rice handled the compliment like a mature woman and a superior. I'll probably watch a few more episodes and hope Lt Rice does more than walk into a scene, say a few words and leave. And I hope the undercover cop is a regular character.

I am an adult - I am a lezbian - and I would like to see adult characters that are not all heterosexual, and where adults don't act immature when it comes to sexuality. I've read a few comments about a new show that have two women starring together and maybe a subtext. How many years has Xena been off-air? Many years later and American television still does subtext with female relationships that maybe more then friendship? America maybe the new country but it still has old world ideas about romantic relationships. America has been "new" long enough and now needs to grow up and stop pretending life is a fairytale where only heterosexuals exist.

Shake It Off

this morning melissa etheridge was on at 9am where she was interviewed and performed some past hits and a couple of songs from her new album "fearless love" - the lyrics to that song "the wanting of you"got to me a little teeny bit - sometimes i think about - don't want to think about - but i do sometimes think about - that song made me think about - a woman - that married a man - had his children and - and i sometimes wonder - does she - ever - think of her past - does she ever think about those days - those nights of her and - me - i can't write music - i can't play my guitar well - but i can write about it and sing in my head - the sometimes pain in my heart - comes thumping back - deep breath - silent sigh - it's okay to think of the past - it's okay to remember - it's okay to shed a tear - it still stings sometimes - but i didn't die - it just means - for me - it was real - don't think too deeply about it - just feel - when i'm asked - if i've ever been in love - i shake my head and mumble - no - part of me loved each and every one - but there is always that extra special - sweet one - who just ended up being a name i can't say out loud - or write down - i was her secret darling - but it's okay - she had her reason for walking away - i wasn't the reason that made her go - although - some would say the reason was me - i wasn't a man you see - okay i shook that off - reading post at lesbian sites - also make me pause - because many are by - women - who are married to men - but wants to be with a - woman - most women I know are - married - to men and every once in a while - i get a look - you can imagine that look - a look that i ignore - i'm way past being a woman's after dark delight - how hard will it hit - if one day i go to a site - just to browse - and see her pic and profile - any of their pics and profiles - that say - lesbian - single - divorced - children - just looking - thump - deep breath - silent sigh - shake it off

Michael Jackson & Farrah Fawcett

A cousin called to see if I had heard that Michael Jackson had died. Turning to a MSNBC, the report was that Michael was in a coma. Before the official report was released, there were reports out that he had died. Michael was reportedly taken from his home by ambulance to UCLA medical center about six miles away, having had cardiac arrest. Someone else called to see if I had heard the news. Finally it was confirmed that Michael Jackson had died at the age of 50.
Condolences to the Jackson family. Rest in peace Mike.

I have to add this part because I was a Charlie's Angels fan. Farrah Fawcett also died today at the age of 62. She had cancer. Condolences to her family. Rest in peace Farrah/Jill.

Whew! What a day.

On Demand

Last night, I was watching The Wire on demand with Mom. One episode had two scenes with naked people. About the only thing I feel comfortable watching with her is old westerns because there is no nudity.

Anyway, the first scene was Kima (Sonja Sohn), lesbian detective, feasting on a woman's breast and Mom talked through the whole thing. That's the cop. Did you say she's cheatin? Her girlfriend is going to walk in on her. I told her to stop writing the story and just watch it. If I had been watching alone, I might have rewind to watch the too short scene again. I can do that with on demand.

Another scene was of a male detective having sex with his girlfriend. Mom didn't like that he was cheating on his wife even though they were separated. The guy was on top and the woman's legs was ... well you get the idea, watch the show. Mom talked through it. Look at him, look at him. Mom I'm looking. (and laughing). Sex scenes are not hot when watching it with my Mom. HA! It's actually funny. I'm laughing as I type this.

Mom likes Omar (Michael K. Williams) who is gay and tough. He is sort of a bad/good guy. I have seen this HBO series before but not in a while. I noticed something this viewing that I had not noticed before, one of the officials was at a gay bar. And in a later scene when he was in a room with other male officials, he referred to someone as a cocksucker. The c-word is what a drugdealer boss called Omar but they were scared of him.

Kima is good at her job but turns out to be a cheater in her personal life. What is it with shows that have a lesbian but she has to be a cheater? Can't anyone be faithful? Her girlfriend had a baby but I don't think Kima every touched or talked to him. Omar had two boyfriends but one at a time. He seemed to be the only main character that didn't cheat on his partner.
I will not watch the L-word with Mom. She wants to see it because Pam Grier is on it, but I will not load it and she doesn't know how to. Hey, I don't want her knowing what two women do together. HA!

Gold Star / Dumbing Down

I want a gold star for being a great lover. If there is an award for never having a man inside me, then I want a party and every woman there has to dance with me; and draw numbers to see which day they have to take me out to lunch.

Actress Kelly McGillis said "I'm done with the man thing.

And of course some have used Kelly's public statement about her personal journey to try to support their reason for not approving of equal rights for LGBT people. Someone even seem to think homosexuality is a "race".

I have never had sexual intercourse with a man. I have on more than one occasion written that fact because I know that there are some "queer haters" reading SPT, so I'm trying to stress that I don't need a man in my bed or inside my body to be a woman and be happy. I am a woman regardless that a man does not dominate my life. I think for myself and do what I want, including loving women (when lucky) and I'm truly not sorry that this seems to bother some small minded individuals who obviously have very little going on in their own lives since they are so interested in who is in my bed.

Hey Kelly, I'm single, click SALTY and say hello. And you don't have to dye your hair. (wink!!!)

Kelly doesn't get a gold star and who the F**K cares that she married men and now at the age of 51 publicly says that she likes women. More and more women are starting to embrace their complete sexuality which I think is wonderful and not only because the dating pool is enlarging for me, HA! (Late-in-Life Lesbians)

View Sounds Off on Lesbian Love
Take a look at The View video where 4 female heterosexuals stupidly discuss why women have sexual relationships with women. I thought it was totally insulting and disgusting that they even attempted to discuss this topic. And they acted like they were purposely trying to show how heterosexual they are by not understand homosexuality.

I really don't like saying bad things about women but please, these 4 sounded like idiots, and the younger blond sounded like a sheltered barbie doll who still wasn't allowed to read anything but fairytales. Did she not get the memo so that she could at least have read some blogs by lesbians or somethin to educate herself on a topic she had the nerve to attempt to discuss? And the older blond sounded even worst. The one right of the older blond, at least brought up sexual attraction, while the one left of the younger blond, made the discussion mostly about her. Maybe she was trying to convenience someone she wasn't sexually attracted to her women friends. The only one in the group who could have possible said something intelligent about this topic, was not part of the idiot discussion. Feel better Whoopie.

Now me, if I want to know something, I at least will try to find information and if possible go directly to the source. Now Melissa Etheridge and Rachel Maddow have been on The View, so why not have both of them on the show and have an honest discussion about lesbians with actual lesbians. Both of those women would have made all 4 of them look even more like idiots.

Okay, I'll stop now because I was about to write something really nasty and I will not let that idiot video warp me like that.

What the heck, this is my space. To the 4 View women, lesbians do more to each other than the 2 second tv kiss. We have sex with women, we fuck each other and enjoy it. It is a pity that at least 3 of you seem to know little about love, lust and passion. Read a lesbian novel written by a real lesbian. Browse a few real lesbian websites and attempt to educate yourself, so if you are at a tea party with your heterosexual friends, and for some reason the topic is about lesbians, you will at least sound like you know what you are talking about. Oh wait, maybe that was the whole point of the idiot remarks, you don't want to sound like you know anything about this particular topic.

For a show featuring women, I think The View misrepresent American women. I've seen 3 or 4 episodes of View and unfortunately, these women just didn't 'dumb down" for the lesbian discussion.

Friday/5/1/2009
Okay, I listened to the video again and I have to make a correction. One of the View women did seem to have read something about women who "come out later in life". I think she is a comedian and had better skills than Walters who has a journalist background.

Barbara Walters actually asked 3 heterosexual women: What do you think that a relationship with another woman gives you that a man does not?

It is a damn shame that when there is a discussion about women in relationships with women that 4 heteroseuxals were the ones doing the talking.

My Creative Side

When in elementary school, I liked being in school plays. I memorized everyone's lines. I liked performin but there were no images on television that made me think I could be an actress. There were Black female singers but I didn't fit the profile, so I didn't see myself pursuing that avenue, but I love music and perform in the privacy of my room. Being in the church choir was nice but I don't go to church anymore. I remain in my hometown and occasionally there is love and drama and comedy which sometimes end up in a story or poem.

I'm still waiting for a movie with a romantic love story between two Black lesbians and neither gets killed or raped and are together at the end. Maybe I should get out my ancient video camera and hold auditions.

A decade or so ago, a movie studio opened up not far away and I had thought about checking it out, but I knew the stories being made there was not going to be tales I was interested in being part of. It's been several years since I've heard anything about it, so it might not be there anymore.

The internet is fantastic. I can be creative, blog my stories and poems, and sometimes even get feedback. Now, I need to get a scanner so that I can add my art work to my blog. I have not drawn anything in a long time with just a pencil on paper. These days, I use words to create pictures.

Melissa Etheridge Inspires Me

Rock-n-roll princess, Melissa Etheridge, is my favorite music artist. I don't put people on pedestals but I'd build her one. She's out, proud and loud. I didn't start to write down all my feelings until I listened to her music. It was the 90's and a radio dj said she came out at some political event. That got my interest, and so I was all ears when her song "Like the Way I Do" was played. Wow! (Is it so hard to satisfy your senses? You found out to love me, you have to climb some fences.) I could totally identify with those words. That is a powerful song lyrically, vocally and musically. It rocked. It still rocks. Then VH1 showcased her and I couldn't get enough. I was taping her whenever I knew she would be on -- shhhh!

So I began to write about my life and I could easily remember how I was feeling way back to when I was a kid. Not every poem I write is about my life but what I imagine and see around me. I'm still surprised at some of the stuff that comes out of me. It might be one or two lines in a poem that make me pause and think back to how it was generated. Listening to Melissa E got me to open up more and write down my feelings and thoughts. Now I have a blog and have put a lot of my writings on here. After reading several post from girls/women who have trouble with faith, have parents who are not accepting, or just feel isolated because they don't know any lesbians where they live, I hope each who visit SPT will connect with one of my poems and feel better.

When I first started to write I would wonder what was the point of writing this stuff down. It was in my head and no one else was going to read it. And from that thought came the lines: so you ask -- why tell -- it's over and done -- if you spit on dirt -- it only makes mud -- because i want it out of my head -- so it can be buried without dread (from The Twins). Some poems just flowed so easily while some had to be put aside and finished later.

So SPT readers, whatever you are feeling and thinking and dealing with because of your sexuality, just know that you are not the only one. HA! Okay, see how Melissa just slips in? Anyway, the characters I write about are women that I always wanted to see on tv and read about when I was younger -- lesbians with full lives -- family, friends and lovers. I've read paperback books and web-stories that have women happily married to men or have boyfriends but cheat with a female friend/neighbor/co-worker out of curiousity or boredom. I want to write about women who love women and have passionate sex and make love to each other without a man in
the middle. So I write for myself and get to share on this blog. I hope that I'm stimulating some women and not just their brains. HA! I can't help it, I'm single and think about women maybe getting a little heated from something I've written.HA! What can I say, I like women.

TO Melissa E: Thanks for the music and the inspiration. -S-

Hollywood and Gay Presentation

NOTE: I don't like censorship but I don't promote hate. This post was deleted and put back up because it was the only way I could remove a commenter's name. I will not direct anyone to a site that I think is harmful. Anyone telling someone they will go to hell for loving is not promoting God in Heaven.

I heard Sean Penn's 2009 Oscar speech while watching The Rachel Maddow Show. If you didn't see Penn and Dustin Lance Black speak check out the video bar below(it's labelled). The people that Penn spoke of outside the event as they drove up was probably not shown. Another hollywood star who is not gay spoke up for equal rights. I read an article about the best actress and actor with Penn getting maybe three or four lines. There was no real mention of his speech except to say that he made a few jokes. As that writer did, some people refuse to acknowledge gay issues. I read an article where an actor in the Milk movie made a point of saying he didn't like kissing Penn. Hmm, I don't like kissing men either except in the usual hello and goodbye way.
About a couple of weeks ago, I saw a bio on actor Will Smith. In the movie Six Degrees of Separation, he played a gay man pretending to be the son of Sydney Portier. There was a scene where he was kissing a man but it really wasn't a kiss, just the camera angle made it appear so. Smith said if he had the chance to do it again, he would kiss the guy. I think now that he is a man secure with his own sexuality and have been around real gay people, he has matured pass the junk he has heard about homosexuals.

I would like to see a hollywood "lesbian" movie/tv show with real lesbians. I just laughed and shook my head when I read that on the L-Word, the hetero-actresses had to be told how to make-out with a woman. My first thought was that making-out with a woman would be natural. But thinking back to my brief encounters with males, I was awkward when a guy kissed or tried to touch me. In the movie But I'm a Cheerleader when the girl is so NOT into her boyfriend who was kissing her in the car, reminded me of my boyfriend kissing me and I was so not into it.

MELISSA on The View

If you were working this morning and didn't see Melissa Etheridge on The View, click the YouTube video URL.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fLSJeVZ0LI

I don't watch The View, even Whoopie can't get me to tune in. But I set the cable box and even though I was sick in bed, I woke long enough to see it. One of the regulars, brought up the topic on Prop 8 and of course Our Warrior was ready to respond. But she was eventually cut off because she was there to promote her new album "A New Thought For Christmas". The one who had started the conversation said the people should decide what's right for the country. WOW! The heterosexual woman thinks people should vote on who can get legally married. (As long as there is no vote on her right to marry. And what the hell does she mean "what's right for the country"? American citizens being denied civil rights is definitely not good for the country. The View should let viewers vote on keeping her or telling her bye-bye.) She said, it's not a personal issue for her, and since it is not, why does she get to vote on something that doesn't affect her rights.

I had written more, but decided to not include it. Don't mind me, I'm just a Black lesbian woman. " I'll never be White. I'll never be heterosexual. I'll never be a man. So I'll never be equal.

I'm going back to bed now. When I wake and hopefully feel better, I know things in America will be the same. My body might feel better but not my mine.

HOOKED ON A FEELING

nothing to be shy about - nothing we have to lie about - hope this feeling don't confuse you - what can i do with this feeling - hooked on your love, sweet love

I don't know who wrote the words but it's a song from the movie "Sparkle". Some of you will know this title from way back. Copy and paste this title --Sparkle (HQ) Hooked On Your Love -- onto any video screen and take a look/listen. Irene Cara, Lonette McKee, Dwan Smith are sisters and Mary Alice plays their mother. Sparkle is one of my favorite movies. The ladies looked real fine in those red dresses. Listen to the words and remember back to when you first got 'hooked on this feeling'. Phillip Michael Thomas (Miami Vice) and Dorian Harewood are handsome but I wasn't swooning over them all those years ago. It was the women who had my attention.

WANDA SYKES is a lesbian

Wanda Sykes is a lesbian!!! Just last week, I was wondering when a Black lesbian celeb would make the announcement. I will have to put her pic on my sidebar. Hey, I need Black lesbian role models too. So now I have one who has announced publicly that she is a proud Black lesbian woman.
Actually, I have two -- Staceyann Chin (right) isn't exactly a celeb but she is to me -- she has been n HBO and is out and proud.

RACHEL MADDOW

Rachel Maddow, 35-year-old Rhodes scholar, on MSNBC nightly, is an Out 100 honoree. "I am not, like, Anchor Babe, and I'm never gonna be," she said in an interview.

I saw Rachel on tv last night and stared at her and ignored Mom who was talking. She's always talking. Rachel, you can characterize yourself any way that you want to, but you don't look like a man to me. Intelligence, humor and
beauty - WHEW! - what a combination. As I was mesmerized by her smile, I refrained from saying she is
gay. Mom thinks I know everybody who is gay. OUT 100 Honorees

DENYING GAY MARRIAGE is more wasteful spending

I read that Ellen D had given $100,000 for ads in support of gay marriage in California. That's a week's salary for her. And I'm not even going to calculate how many years I would have to work to make that much money. I just think about how many wells could be dug so that people could have clean drinking water. One house could have been paid for in full. Millions of dollars are being raised to fight for and against gay marriage. That's a waste, and just goes to show why the economy is in the shape it is in now. Wasteful spending. People not really caring about other people enough to do the RIGHT thing. And the same goes for politicians raising campaign money. And who really benefits? The hotels, plane - bus - auto - companies, radio and tv companies. People have lost their homes and jobs and don't have electricity and all that money is just WASTED. Why couldn't at least one politician simply say he was going to make two or three videos to be aired on television and YouTube. I only watched one debate but that was enough for me to get a feel of what each man was about. After that, if I needed more, it should have been on a flyer sent to every citizen registered to vote. Politics equal wasteful spending. How much money did it cost to have the definition of marriage defined and to change state constitutions? Hmm, it sure was easy to change state and federal constitutions.

MELISSA & TAMMY to wed

I keep getting Google alerts about Melissa and Tammy getting married before the next vote in California. Um, didn't they already do that. Oh, it didn't have the government seal of approval, so they are not legally married. Well, I think of them as married. I have a cyber-friend who is married to a woman. They tied the knot in Canada which means it is not recognized in the United States. Well, I recognize it, their family and friends recognize it.

I think every gay couple who wants to get married, should go ahead and have their ceremony. There should be a database where gay couples can register so that there will be a record. We should not let the government have that kind of control over our lives.

TENNIS ANYONE

I started watching tennis in 1985. I was clicking channels and came upon tennis. Two women were on the court, and it was match point. But one player would not lose that last point. Something about one of them caught my interest. Maybe the way she moved. So I watched a bit more. From the way the commentators spoke about the people in the player's box, I quickly got the idea that the woman who had captured my attention had a girlfriend. Hmmm, even more interesting. The player I was watching was Martina Navratilova. I think she won that match after being break point down. I didn't know scoring then. From 1985 till today, I'm a tennis fan. She was at the this years US Open and looks good.

Thanks Martina for the excellent performances you displayed on the court. And for the work you do concerning Human Rights. * * * * * (5 gold stars) Keep chipping & chargining.

MOVIES & REAL LIFE

Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit is one of my favorite movies. (BBC 1990 mini series) It starts with a little girl being raised by adoptive parents. Her mother has this religious thing going but being human, she is no angel in how she treats the girl. (My mother has never slapped me upside my head.) She wants the girl to be a missonary. When a teen, the girl sees another girl and is instantly drawn to her. They become friends and then lovers. And I don't want to give away the whole story, for Readers who have not seen this movie. But the girl's life becomes complicated when her mother suspects about the two teens. What the mother, pastor and other church members do to the teen is -- nasty - and done under the cloak of 'saving her soul'. It was a very distressful scene.

A Stevie Nicks fan got to talk one-on-one with her. The fan told how her parents threw out her records as if the music had something to do with her being a lesbian. In Oranges movie, the teens mother raided her bedroom, threw out books and letters from her girlfriend. That was painful to watch. The 'lez' movies I like best are the ones where a lesbian has family that live close. It's harder to have a 'secret/discreet' life when you are not anonymous.

In the movie 'Go Fish', a young woman gets slapped by her mother. It was one mi-nute incident in the movie, but the most powerful scene. And at the end of the movie, the issue between mother and daughter is not resolved. Just that little glimpse into one character's family life, explains why Gay people are afraid to tell their families about their sexuality - fear of losing them. In the movie the woman was just living her life, wasn't putting it in her mother's face. But a guy that the woman use to date told her mother. It was none of his business and he only did it to mess up the woman's relationship with her mother. Could he have thought that she would date him again just to please her mother? If he had cared about her, he wouldn't have did it. In this movie there was no 'coming out' - the women were lesbians who had no problem with being a lesbian within themselves. The woman who was OUTED by an ex-boyfriend, was pushed into revealing her sexuality to her mother.

I know some Gay people say be proud, be open, tell people. I have never had a big coming out thing. <well, only one> I live my life and what I do privately is my business. When a woman gets to be my age and doesn't date men, it's not hard to figure out why. My family know that men have wanted to date me, but I only go out with women. So it's not like I can't get a man. They don't have to get slapped in the face with it. And other people don't matter. I don't know who my single family members are dating most times. I was outed at work, and it only made things more interesting because I was working mostly with women. Male co-workers stopped showing interest, but not the women.

When I'm in a funky mood, my Mom will ask me when was the last time I heard from HER. She tells me I should invite HER to lunch down by the river. Mom has even cooked breakfast for us. So she knows HER is special. But at this point HER is a friend. And you don't need to know more than that.
