The Original Charlie's Angels subtext?

One of my favorite all time tv shows is Charlie's Angels. As a lesbian teen it was good for me to see that women could be intelligent, athletic and attractive who could do more than get into trouble and wait for a man to rescue her. The original Angels did it all. They could run, race cars, skate board, dance, roller blade, swim, play golf, tennis and they had guns that they would shot if they had to.

Kate Jackson (left) is one of my favorite actresses. She played Sabrina Duncan, the unofficial leader of the Angels. I'm not the only one who thought there was a connection other than working partners between Sabrina and Kelly. Kelly Garrett (right) was played by Jacqueline Smith. Some of the looks and antics between those two lovely ladies were more interesting to me than the occasional romantic interest they had with male quest stars. They played better off each other than with the men. Hey, it was the late 70's and I had to get my tv lez-pairing when I could.

I'm not the only one who noticed the subtext between Sabrina and Kelly. Last night I came across a page that had a Sabrina/Kelly ship manifesto. I snagged some nice pics so I'll give the URL so you can go visit that site and see them yourselves. It has been a long while since I've watched Charlie's Angels and reading that page brought back some fond memories and I even remember some of the lines. At the bottom of that page are a few title to Sabrina & Kelly stories.

It is now 2010 and hollywood still do shows that have women playing off each other in subtle ways so that women who love women have to imagine what they do when in private. I've been reading reviews of current tv shows where the imagination has to be used instead of just putting women together in a romantic relationship. I pay for cable too so why can't I turn my tv set on and see a show or movie that have women in romantic relationships with each other? It is not enough to have women touching lips, with no passion, or laying in bed together as friends because that is only tossing crumbs, and I'm not hunger enough to watch that. I'd rather read a web-story or make up my own stories about women who do more than look into each others eyes.

Have you figured out that I just posted this because I want to have that pic on my blog. :) HA!

  1. Hey my friend. I totally loved Charlie's Angels even though at the time I didn't know I was lesbian. I really wanted my brother's poster he had of all three after a jail break. Hot babes in jeans and work shirts. Does not get much better than that. Had not been on here in a bit and thought I'd better stop by and check out you latest posts. Hugs. Amy

  2. Hi Amy. I had a Charlie's Angels poster on my wall. I still have my C.A. scrapbook. I use to collect pics and articles about them. It's been a long time since I've looked at it. I was a fan but stopped watching after Kate Jackson left the show. As always, thanks for taking time to check out SPT and leaving a comment. :)

The Agenda-Civil Rights

Support for the LGBT Community: While we have come a long way since the Stonewall riots in 1969, we still have a lot of work to do. Too often, the issue of LGBT rights is exploited by those seeking to divide us. But at its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans. It's about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect. Federal law should not discriminate in any way against gay and lesbian couples. ... young & old, rich & poor, democrat & republican, black white hispanic asian native american gay straight disable and not disable ... we are and always will be the United States of America. --Barack Obama, (More)
