Rusty 7

Things had calmed down some, the phone had finally stopped ringing. Cousins and friends had stopped dropping by to see if Rusty was all right. Rusty and Gayle finally got a chance to speak to each other alone. Nancy had Vanessa in the kitchen with her as she put away left overs.

"Thank you for coming for us. I didn't know what to do, not having the money for even a motel room for one night, even if I could have walked out" Gayle said as she sat on the sofa with Rusty. They were holding hands. Rusty didn't say that she could have come to her or went to the shelter. She had correctly reasoned that Gayle wasn't allowed to use the phone or leave her mama's house.

"I've already made arrangements to buy the mobile home, but I want you and Vanessa to stay here tonight, and maybe for a couple of days, to be on the safe side."

"Mama sold my furniture and kept the money. I can't afford new furniture or electricity or gas for my car which mama still has. I lost my part-time job because I wasn't allowed to leave the house. I don't make enough money doing hair to maintain a household."

"Things baby, things can be replaced. You and Vanessa are safe, that's what is important. You and Little Vee can sleep in my room and I'll sleep in my office. Do you have anyone who can go to your mother's house and get your clothes?"

"Maybe my sister will do it, if mama let's her. I'll call her now. I couldn't go to her because she only has a one bedroom apartment and her teenage son sleeps on the sofa. Her husband died two years ago and she couldn't afford the mortgage payments with her salary alone. Mama didn't like Lucy's husband. I had thought about asking Lucy to come stay with me and Vanessa, but we haven't been especially close lately. And I don't really know why, but was thinking that maybe mama had said something to her about my "perversion".

"Can you call her now and ask? And tomorrow, we can talk about getting you and Little Vee set up back home."

Rusty couldn't explain the feeling she had sitting beside Gayle and holding her hands. She wanted to pull her close and hold her but didn't want to rush things. That night, as Gayle laid down beside Vanessa, she was a little disappointed that the bed andbeen totally redressed. The spread, matching sheets and pillowcases had that fresh laundry smell. She wouldn't have minded if Rusty's spread had remained so that she could pull the cover up and snuggle under it.

The next evening after work, Gayle's sister Rhonda picked up the two suitcases and brought them to Rusty's house. Nancy, Rusty and Vanessa sat outside on the deck so that the two sisters could have privacy to talk over the situation. Rusty gave Vanessa some money to get ice creamwhen the truck game.

"Mama is pissed. She's more concerned about what people will think about her having a gay daughter than about your happiness. Who did that?" Rhonda asked motioning toward her sister's bruised face.

"When I told mama that she couldn't keep me there forever, she again threatened to take Vanessa away from me. When I told her that I would still be a lesbian even if I wasn't with a woman, she hit me. She was holding the Bible trying to show me scripture, and she just swungout. She didn't mean to hurt me, at least not physically."

"She used the book on you in more ways than one huh?" Rhonda said sadly as she looked at her older sister. I'm sorry Gayle, but I didn't know all this was going on. I got a part-time job because I needed more money than my full-time job was paying. Ricky got a summer job at a fast-food place, so that helps him get some stuff that he wants. I got tired of mama putting down my husband for not having enough life insurance and leaving me in debt when he died, so I just stopped going there so much. And with the extra job, I didn't have much time to even keep in touch with you."

"I thought mama had told you about me and you were avoiding me."

"Girl, I don't have the time to be worrying about who you're getting kisses from."

"So mama never said anything to you about the other woman I was dating?"

"The other woman? My you have been busy."

"That was after I broke up with Wayne. We hadn't been dating long when mama found out about us. She threaten to take me to court and get custody of Vanessa, so I stopped seeing her."

"And what about legs out there? How long have you been dating her before mama found out?" Rhonda asked.

"We haven't actually dated. Well, the night at the motel would have been the first time we were out together."

"What, no dinner, no movie?" Rhonda smiled.

Gayle told her sister about the first time she saw Rusty and what had occurred between them, which lead to this moment of the sister's sitting in Rusty's house talking and drinking iced tea. The sisters talked quietly and Rhonda said they would start making time for each other. As shesaid good night to the Bolton's she thanked them for taking care of her sister and niece.

Later, after everyone had showered and watched a movie, Gayle lead her sleepy daughter down the hall to Rusty's bedroom. Yesterday, Rusty had said she loved her, but a whole day had passed without them even sharing a kiss. After Vanessa had fallen back to sleep, Gayle left the bedroom but left the door open and the hall light on. Returning to the living room, she found that Nancy had gone to her room and the door was closed. Gayle sat on the sofa and after a few minutes, she motioned for Rusty to sit beside her.

"Rusty, just because you said you love me, doesn't mean we have to rush into anything."

"I know", Rusty said lacing her left fingers with Gayle's right as she slid closer.

"You just seem more comfortable when we are not alone" Gayle smiled.

"When we're not alone, I can behave myself" Rusty returned the smile and kissed the back of the hand she was holding.

"You know, right now I'm very excited and scared all at the same time. I can finally be with you, and I'm broke. I need a job."

"Your furniture was bought by a used furniture store. We'll go tomorrow and get it back. Or you can get all new stuff if you want to. Put in some applications. You can contact your hair clients and let them know you're available again to do their hair. You might get more customers nowthat you have more time."

"You make it seem simple. Doing a few heads will cover the lot payment but not the rent and there is also utilities and food. I can't draw unemployment because I left the part-time job I had.I know you'll want to help me financially, but I'm not comfortable with that. I can't depend on Wayne giving me anything. If I complain down town again, he'll use my relationship with you to try to get custody of Vanessa. I don't ..."

"There is no rent. I bought it today. I'll help out with utilities and anything else you need. And you can keep a record if it will make you feel better. You know you could go to the shelter but I give money there too. But I'd rather have you close again. And I want todate you properly."

"You want to date me?"

"Yes. I want to take you to dinner and to the movies."

The next few weeks passed without trouble from Gayle's mother or Wayne. The furniture was bought back and Gayle began to do hair again. A couple of women had heard the gossip about Gayle being a lesbian and didn't want her doing their hair anymore. There were a couple of clients that brought someone with them so as to not be in the house alone with Gayle while their hair was being done. Because Gayle was good at doing hair, had reasonable fees and more time, she had more clients than before, which earned her enough money to pay lot and utility bills. Rusty didn't have to help her much with the utility bill. And because she and Vanessa ateoften at Nancy's table or was taken out to dinner, her food bill wasn't much.

Gayle was getting by but she was the happiest that she had ever been in her life. She had her daughter and a new love and the relationship with her sister had improved. The downside to her life was beingestranged from her mother and the rest of her family. She hoped that eventually her mother would stop quoting scripture and see that her life was more than the few verses written in an ancient book.

Rusty and Gayle had been dating openly for a month. They went to restaurants and movies sometimes with Nancy and Vanessa or Sandy and Gary. Twice Rhonda and her son had dinner at the Bolton home, so that they all could get better acquainted. Rusty and Gayle also were invited to have dinner at Zion's home one evening. Rhonda's son Corey was impressed that they knew the rock star.

One evening, after having dinner out alone, The new couple was at Gayle's place having some alone time, while Vanessa was with Nancy. They both were a bit on edge knowing tonight they would finally going to make love to each other. Gayle was nervous because she had very little experience in the art of pleasuring a woman. She had only been with one woman and while pleasurable, and limited, this just felt totally different because she was in-love with Rusty. Rusty who was very experienced, was anxious, not only to finally get to physically be with Gayle, but also feeling weird because it had been so long since she had felt this deeply for someone. What she was feeling was more than the excitement of getting to explore and taste a new woman. Maybe she was even a tiny bit scared of this dormant emotion that Gayle made surface.

The Agenda-Civil Rights

Support for the LGBT Community: While we have come a long way since the Stonewall riots in 1969, we still have a lot of work to do. Too often, the issue of LGBT rights is exploited by those seeking to divide us. But at its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans. It's about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect. Federal law should not discriminate in any way against gay and lesbian couples. ... young & old, rich & poor, democrat & republican, black white hispanic asian native american gay straight disable and not disable ... we are and always will be the United States of America. --Barack Obama, (More)
