News Worthy ... Not

A woman who was in a beauty contest said on national tv that she thinks marriage is between a man and woman. Okay, that's her opinion. But why is it news worthy and she gets to be interviewed on MSNBC? And the guy who asked her the question was given the mike for about five seconds because he called her an improper name. But he wouldn't be given five seconds if he wanted to talk about his opinion of the marriage issue.

It is amazing what goes for news on MSNBC, which is a channel that my mother now watches every day because she wants to hear about President Obama. I remember a brief mention was given about the man who was shot in his yard last year by the police. We immediately thought he was Black because it usually is and because no details were given. I learned about the killing of a Black man by a cop from a blog. I saw nothing about this on MSNBC. From a blog, I learned about two gay men who were beaten unconscious on a beach. There was little reporting on MSNBC about California's prop 8 or the demonstration's afterwards. News that affects a lot of people seem to still be of little interest if it is not about a missing caucasion female, a politician or celebrity.

Don't get me wrong, I think missing females are news worthy stories and so is the one about the caucasion 13-year-old who was strip searched at school, but there are other news stories that should be given equal time.

MSNBC is a political news channel but they don't seem to think that voting on equal rights for gay citizens is political. Blacks being killed or abused by the police is not seen as political. Gay people being abused is not seen as political. I'll tell you what isn't political -- the personal opinion of a beauty contestant. Why wasn't gay people interviewed during Prop 8 elections?

It is sickening to the nerves about what major news media consider news worthy stories. Where are the journalist? Now a days, a handful of the same stories get coverage. Will America become like North Korea and only certain things will be allowed to be reported to the people? When I powered up my computer, there should have been in one of the 4 boxes, stories about the police killing & shooting unarmed men and the two men who were beaten unconscious. But it is more news worthy that an olympic athlete was caught smoking an illegal substance. It is sickening.

  1. I once worked for a news department as a newswriter. It was run by small minded white business men. Every time I wrote any news sourced from gay newspapers about worldwide news -concerning gay people - it was not included. I was told my information was only hear say. Every time they had anything that fit their racist, white male mentality - they flashed it on the TV quicker than you could blink your eyes and spit.

It is not news until the straight white boys at the stations think it's news. Its all about their agenda. Thats the sad fact.

  3. Hi SteadyCat. The local news media (radio,tv) where I live would not give coverage to a Civil Rights rally a couple of years ago. It was announced on the one Black radio station but not on the 2 White ones and the tv-news station would not bring out the mobile unit. There is so much going on and it's not being reported by the mainstream media. Here in America, the truth is, not much has changed where Civil Rights for Black and Gay citizens are concerned.

The Agenda-Civil Rights

Support for the LGBT Community: While we have come a long way since the Stonewall riots in 1969, we still have a lot of work to do. Too often, the issue of LGBT rights is exploited by those seeking to divide us. But at its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans. It's about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect. Federal law should not discriminate in any way against gay and lesbian couples. ... young & old, rich & poor, democrat & republican, black white hispanic asian native american gay straight disable and not disable ... we are and always will be the United States of America. --Barack Obama, (More)
